A rare catalogue, and probably one of the first to cover fictile ivory, a recently invented method of approximating the look of ivory using “Plaster of Paris, with Silica, and other matters capable of being moulded into the most delicate and beautiful forms, and which by nice manipulation, is made to take the appearance of ivory so exactly...” It was used to reproduce original ivory forms in a more affordable medium. This design celebrates the uprising on the 2nd May, 1808 of the Spanish in Madrid against the occupation of the French; hundreds of poorly armed Spaniards were crushed and killed by the Imperial troops. Fine full crushed green morocco binding by Fazakerley of Manchester, inset red leather border strip, ornate art-nouveau gilt and blind designs to covers and spine panels. With silk end papers and inset panel to front pastedown incorporating the bookplate of Robert Bateman of Carlisle. In the original cloth bound solander box, the box hinge rather damaged. The preservation of the box has kept this completely unused book and binding in extraordinary condition. View more info
