8vo. pp. 15, 124, 55 diagrams and tables in the text. Written in a neat hand in ink, contemporary French sheep backed marbled boards with a little wear to the spine. In two parts, the first section, signed by V. Miller, is a detailed ‘Description physique’ of the region, describing the geography of the area along with a description of the inhabitants and their towns and villages with a view to the military aspects and defensibility of the area as one of the major passes between Spain and France. The immediate area has a curious Spanish enclave, Livia, entirely surrounded by France. The second part of the manuscript is a well-illustrated study of fortifications, their construction and maintenance, with particular reference to campaign fortifications, rather than permanent constructions and would therefore have been an invaluable reference for use in the field. Covering fortifications for defence as well as for assault, descriptions of the use of natural and artificial features, the use of bridges, water and flooding, etc.
