Single sheet, printed both sides, 620 x 160 mm. chips and tears with slight loss to the foot and along an old fold at the word ‘Giant’. Millie and Christine, the two-headed nightingale [or Carolina Twins] were born slaves and were sold several times to various showmen until the Emancipation proclamation of 1863 which freed them; they eventually came under the patronage of wealthy businessman Joseph Pearson Smith who educated them, teaching them five languages and to dance, play music and sing. The giants Anna Swan and Martin Van Buren Bates married in June of 1871, just prior to this exhibition. Although Bates is stated here to be about 8 feet high, the Guinness Book of Records gives his height as 7ft 5½inches; Annie Swan was taller at 7ft 11 inches.
