Folio [370 x 240 mm]. pp. 207 [+ blanks], [5, index]. Contemporary sheep backed boards, loose, front inner joint broken and one section loose. Original manuscript order book which probably covers the entire output of the firm under this name; in 1911 it became Boon and Son, Proprietor J.S. Arnold; then J.S. Arnold (Coachbuilders) Ltd., still in existence as a body shop to this day. A highly detailed and fascinating record of the output of a skilled local joiner and cart maker who made carts, carriages, wagons and vans for private, commercial and council customers, many for repeat orders. In chronological order this valuable document records designs, detailed specifications, materials and quantities used for a variety of vehicles, together with customers, cross referenced by an index at the rear of the volume. It was obviously also used as a pattern book as orders for the same or similar vehicles are recorded as well as alterations to specifications. The detail is extraordinary, and typical of meticulous craftsmen of the time, with all the minutiae of the sizes and material written out long hand, with small drawings of particular fittings where necessary, possibly also to be used for ordering specific parts from a blacksmith or metal worker.
