Original drawing in pencil and crayon, 280 x 220 mm, framed and glazed in modern frame. Peake wrote a number of plays, but only one, The Wit to Woo, was produced in his lifetime, to poor reviews. As with most things that he wrote, he also drew the characters for the play. There was a ‘chorus’ of four undertakers, each very distinct in appearance [see Mervyn Peake, the Man and His Art, edited by G. Peter Winnington. 2006]. This is one of those undertakers.
