1st Edition. 2 volumes. pp. 237: 246; 28 [publisher’s catalogue dated November 1880]. Original cloth rubbed with some professional restoration to the spine edges. Sadleir 59. (ii) ‘Freak’ disposition. “The disposition of the blocking on the volumes of this novel is very curious and, so far as I know, unparalleled in nineteenth century publishing.” In this case both volumes carry the ‘freak’; volume one with the blocking to the rear board, and volume two to the front board. Sadleir is inclined to give priority to this issue “because copies normally blocked are more frequent than those I have called ‘freaks’, and also because the catalogue at the end of vol. II., which is a sign of the first binding-up, almost always appears in ‘freak copies’ but by no means always in copies with normal disposition.”
