Owindia: a True Tale of the MacKenzie River Indians. North-West America., [BOMPAS, Charlotte Selina]
19 [BOMPAS, Charlotte Selina] Owindia: a True Tale of the MacKenzie River Indians. North-West America.
Wells Gardner, Darton and Co., [1886]
Small square 8vo. pp. 60; frontispiece. Original white cloth a little soiled. Very Good. An intriguing copy with a manuscript ps. covering the two rear blanks outlining the fate of the child, Owindia, after being brought to England by her adoptive white family. Hers was a tragic tale. Her father, Michael the Indian, a hater of white men and hot-headed, killed his wife and abandoned his children. His youngest, Owindia, was found by passing travelers and eventually adopted by white parents. Renamed Lucy May Owindia, she was taken to England where she died aged 7. A font was erected in her memory at the church at Fort Simpson, Northwest Territories. Charlotte Bompas was the wife of the Anglican Bishop of Fort Simpson; she established the first school there in 1874. Rare. There are no north American locations listed on Worldcat.
