2 The Whole Proceedings on the Trial Between Mrs Rebecca Minifie, and W.D. Best, Esq. Sergeant at Law, and Member of Parliament, Charged With an Assault Upon Rebecca, the Wife of James Minifie, in His Chambers, Where She, at his request, concerning a reversionary property, in which he acted for her as Counsel, which was tried at the Court of Kin's-Bench, Guildhall, on Thursday, July 12, 1804 Before Lord Ellenborough, and a Special Jury.
John Fairburn, [1804]
8vo. pp. 20. Disbound, Very Good. Best was defended by William Garrow who was responsible for the introduction of the adverserial court system, insisting that all evidence should be thoroughly tested in court and introduced the phrase "presumed innocent until proven guilty". In this case he successfully defended Best who was shown to be a victim of an attempt at extortion. "A more horrid and dreadful attempt to ruin and destroy a worthy and highly respected character never was made; and a more satisfactory and honourable aquittal never was pronounced." William Garrow.

Geograpahical Fun: Being Humourous Outlines of Various Countries. With an Introduction and Descriptive Lines., “ALEPH” [HARVEY, William Henry]
3 “ALEPH” [HARVEY, William Henry] Geograpahical Fun: Being Humourous Outlines of Various Countries. With an Introduction and Descriptive Lines.
Hodder and Stoughton, [1868]
4to. pp. [6], 12 coloured maps, [4, publisher’s adverts]. Original cloth, rather rubbed and gutta percha perished with some slight chupping to the margins of the maps, not affecting the images. The introduction describes these caricature maps as the work of a "young lady... in her fifteenth year." The introduction itself and accompanying four lines of verse beneath each map are ascribed to "Aleph" on the title-page, but the book was in fact a posthumous work by William Harvey, wood-engraver, illustrator and writer of verse for children. The 12 chromolithographed, anthropomorphic maps comprise: England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, France, Spain, Italy, Prussia, Germany, Holland & Belgium, Denmark and Russia.

Bronze Figure: Seated Girl Laughing., ARDIZZONE, Edward
6 ARDIZZONE, Edward Bronze Figure: Seated Girl Laughing.
The Estate of Edward Ardizzone, 2006.
bronze, approximately 6.5 inches high x 7 inches AN EXTREMELY RARE ITEM FROM AN EDITION OF ONLY 3 Edward Ardizzone (1900 - 1979) was a popular and successful artist and illustrator who is highly regarded. His illustrated figures are instantly recognisable and this fine bronze statue is typically Ardizzone. He became interested in sculpture when he was working at Camberwell School of Art in the late 1940s and early 1950s where he was friendly with Karel Vogel, head of the sculpture department. Vogel was at that time making a series of small terracottas. Aridizzone liked the idea of small sculptures of active characters rather than poses, and terracotta is a medium which lent itself to this mode of expression with its immediacy and relatively rapid composition. He made no more than a dozen pieces in all before devoting himself to his other work which actually earned him his living. Some of these terracottas were exhibited at the Leicester Galleries and were subsequently retained by the family. In 2006, Rupert Otten of Wolseley Fine Art, mounted a retrospective exhibition in memory of Ardizzone's youngest son, Nicholas. Otten commissioned a bronze casting from one of the sculptures with the intention of limiting the edition to nine. In the event only 3 examples were cast. This example is numbered 3 of 9, presumably the last to be cast. Supplied with a print-out of an email from Otten confirming the size of the edition.

Random Rhymes., BAZALGETTE, Norman
10 BAZALGETTE, Norman Random Rhymes.
John Smith & Co., Printers, 1870.
8vo. pp. [4], 67. Original cloth a little soiled and split on the spine, endpapers a little stained. Inscribed presentation copy “To Blangy old Bartle, from his affectionate friend Norman Bazalgette.” Charles Norman Bazalgette was the second son of Sir Joseph Bazalgette, he was a barrister much engaged with the advancement of Wimbledon but also with Local Government enquiries regarding sewerage schemes on the lower Thames.. He was the author of various fascinating works including "Local and Municipal Government" and "The Law relating to County Councils". He also wrote a valuable article on abattoirs for the Encyclopaedia Britannica. He died at the very young age of 41; a newspaper obitituary is tipped into the front cover. The poems are pretty typical verses by a Victorian Oxford undergraduate where he was studying the law. Scarce. Worldcat lists the British Library as the only U.K. location; it can also be found in a smattering of U.S. institutions.
