2 CANARY ISLANDS [Anon] The Fortunate Isles.
1891.
Small 4to. pp. 4 - 152 [lacking a title and possibly introductory page]. Contemporary half sheep, worn, front cover detached. With the bookplate of J. Scott Fraser and a photographic copy of a watercolour portrait of a gentleman, possibly the author, inserted. A diary of a voyage to the Canary Islands in June and July 1891. Leaving from Newport, South-east Wales on 20th June, there follows a detailed documentation of daily life on board ship, describing the ship, fellow passengers, weather; in short, the minutiae of life, arriving at Los Palmas on Grand Canary in the morning of 28th June. He describes the coal labourers coming aboard and the view of the harbour and other ships at anchor. He checked in at the Santa Catalina Hotel which he also describes, as well as his fellow guests. There follows a description of the island, its inhabitants, industries, visits to the interior, etc. and a meeting with two Englishmen, Mr. P- and Mr. T- who ‘lead a bachelor life.’ On 2nd July he embarked on board a steamer for a 6 day cruise among the Canary Islands which he describes in great detail. This includes stopping off at various islands and ‘a perilous journey’ on mule-back up the mountains of El Hiero to Valverde. “At a height of 1500 feet an accident happened to one of our party. The girth band of the saddle suddenly broke and the rider. without a moment’s warning was thrown and would have precipitated head foremost over the edge of the path but for the promptitude of the driver who seized him by the left foot as he fell...the mule drivers are notoriously careless of their gear...” The return voyage, ending in Antwerp, is described more briefly in only three pages.
