1 [SOMERVILLE, Alexander] Memoirs of Serjeant Paul Swanston; Being a Narrative of a Soldier's Life, in Barracks, Ships, Camps, Battles, and Captivity on Sea and Land; With Notices of the Most Adventurous of His Comrades, written by himself and now first published.
B.D. Cousins, [1840]
8vo. pp. [6], 434. Contemporary half sheep, front board detached, pages rather browned. Alexander Sommerville (1811 - 1885) was a Scottish journalist and radical who had joined the Royal Scots Greys in 1831. Following their deployment to quell troubles during the Reform Bill he wrote a letter to a newspaper claiming that the army would not draw swords on the citizens. On an alternative pretext he was sentenced to 100 lashes and flogged. Subsequent questions in parliament led to a subscription being raised to allow him to purchase his discharge from the army. He subsequantly wrote a number of books on history, politics and on his personal experiences. Copac lists 4 locations only, not in the British Library.
